Could these illustrations get any better? The text is equally as impressive.

The book creatively flows visually & verbally unlike any other children's book I've come across.

Published in 1955 this little jewel is out of print check amazon to get your hands on a copy.

I secretly want it- I think it is my most favorite that I have done so far.
I love how it can be interpreted in so many different ways. It was inspired by Sarah Sample's song one mistake, love that song...

I went up to Park City to shoot some images to work from & get a better feel for the show.

I was trying to capture Park City in a different way but still wanted it to be recognizable.

These were some of my favorite shots, we will see what happens translated in paper....

I had so much fun drawing these for a client. Creating something with one line has me so intrigued. Obviously I love things simplified.... I will finish these off with some watercolor stains.

Coco (Josh's Mom) gave us a gold mine of vintage clothes that Josh wore when he was little. The kids loved wearing "Dad's shirts" to church. I love vintage clothes & I especially love it when there is a family sentiment tied to it. I am having an artist friend paint a still life of a dress that was my G-ma's that I wear now. I am so excited to get it. When I think of how we mark time with events- I like to reminisce about the food & the fashion. After all it was Coco Chanel who said

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

My Dad always uses the term big doings in a sarcastic way. So this announcement is big doings for me in my seemingly small world. It's official contract signed & delivered, I got my first solo show at the Kimball Art Center in Park City!! The show will open February 5 & run 9 weeks. Also I will be the featured artist at the March gallery stroll in Park City- triple !!! The show is called

SNOW DRIVEN

and will include 25 works of winterscapes of Park City, winter sports (skiing, snow boarding etc...), large resort scapes & scenes of the town under all that white stuff.

This little bat got croup the other night & the next night Abe followed suit. I am new to this croup / asthma territory & it has sent me through 2 rolls of tums. Top it off with a broken sewer pipe for 2 days that made our house smell like you know what. The most shining moments of my life will not include the past 48 hours. It was ugly , the mom I said I would never be kind of ugly.

If you haven't had to deal with croup in you kids before, thank your lucky stars. The nights usually go something like this 1:00 am, bark bark bark- Is that a dog?? No it is your child's throat closing in. You rush in to hear the bark & the strider shallow breathing. Then its only natural to argue with your spouse, & run around like a chicken with your head cut off. Should we go to the ER? No take her outside first, okay. Outside she's cold get a blanket- back outside, back inside time for a popsicle, get ice water!! Back outside, should we go to the ER? Are her lips blue?? If we can wait it out with home remedies that will save us $300 bucks. Okay lets wait...... unless her lips turn blue.

FYI: Croup is a reaction to a virus, some kids get it some don't. So the same virus in one kid may just be a cold while in another it can cause croup, kids with asthma seem to be more likely to get it.

If your wondering whether that brown tree in the back ground is a Halloween decoration, it's not it's just dead. We use what we have around here....

Some friends invited us to the Red Butte Gardens After Dark Festival. I have to say I was really impressed.. The kids made magic potions, masks, Aborigine dolls, & Japanese lanterns that they then launched into the pond. Very creative & the kids loved it.

Esmae's pumpkin had a little white spot, eveyone kept telling her it had character- so that night when she showed Josh her beloved pumpkin she said "it's a character".

the kids loved this dried corn, maybe we should rethink the sand pile?

Abes favorite - we rode it 3 times, these were old water barrels- genius I thought....

They had tons of these slides all around, Abe stuck to the little ones

but Es loved the biggest one it was pretty high.

After 3 hours of non stop fun @ 4 dollars kid (including a hayride & picking a pumpkin)

I would say this place is a better value then a Little Ceasars pizza.

I think it's either molars coming in, needs tubes in his ears or he is just done, maybe a combo of all three?

My Dad has always been a real lover of music, so for his Birthday I thought it would be cool to invite The Lower Lights to come surprise him with a private concert in my parents backyard. We invited family & some close friends for the occasion. The weather was perfect & the music incredible.

The Lower Lights is a group of local musicians who got together & did sort of a hymnal revival recording of some really great hymns both old & new. Their spirits & testimonies came through in their music and I know everyone was moved. I think what they are doing is significant & needed, especially for the rising generation.

I get so worried about raising kids in a world full of easily accessible evil. When I think about the approach I want to take with my kids to combat it I think about all the good & beauty in the world too. Rather then frequently talking to them about what they can't or shouldn't do, it seems to me that a more powerful approach may be to expose them to as much good, truth, & beauty that I can fit in. It doesn't hurt to reinvent those old beautiful truths once in awhile either. Here is The Lower Lights playing one of my favorite songs.

When I first saw this painting I literally got chills. The artist is Rose Datoc Dall, she lives in Virginia with her husband and children. The Church owns the painting now & it will go in their permanent collection. It is so great to see a new amazing religious artists getting some attention, her work is incredible and reminiscent of the great Minerva. Check out this video of her, love her even more....

This summer Esmae was almost a full head taller then her entire dance class.

Long limbs can be hard to control.

It plagued me through my ballet years. By the time I was old enough to try out for the coveted Ballet West Nutcracker I had long passed buffoon, even too tall for party girl. They sent me straight to soldier. I was heart broken not to have a chance at party girl but soldier would do. Not a chance first cut gone, I was awkward to begin with but in my defense the girl next to me was 16...

Maybe Esmae will be blessed with better dancing genes from the King side of things.

I am getting back to somewhat of a normal routine & I might even clean my house... maybe. Anyway a big thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement. As an emerging artist there are lots of highs along with lows. I am so glad I have amazing friends & family to build me up when I get knocked down or tell me I am not all that great when my head is in the clouds. No wonder most artists end up crazy if they weren't to begin with. Some normalcy with my kids sounds really grounding & nice right now!

The Park City Arts Festival starts Friday August 6 at 6:00 pm and runs all day Saturday & Sunday.

So far I have 20 originals & lots of limited edition giclee prints.

Come visit my booth #162 if you decide to come up!!

Park City is known for picking a really amazing selection of artists. Festivals are the best place to buy

originals because there is no gallery to mark it up 40%, which is the standard gallery cut.

display at the pc festival for custom orders. Its big & I cut of the top of the tree in

The sale starts in 3 days! I am headed to Fashion Place with my gear to camp out, j/k. However I do feel like this is the first year in awhile that I got really excited about several items. Now I just need some money & an elbow sharpener to get what I've been eyeing....

a heli of a holiday

We headed up to my Grandparents Ranch for the 4th ish. My uncle surprised the family with helicopter rides. Neither Josh nor I had ever been on one before & it was so amazing. The scenery was incredible from way up high. Abe was a little hesitant because of the loud noise but soon calmed down the kids were in awe, along with us....

The rest of the day we spent hanging with cousins, playing a sisterly match of doubles (one sister did get hit with a ball) and horse rides for the kiddos. Almost an unlawfully amount of fun. Then we headed to the traditional Oakley Rodeo. Abe sat still for 5 minutes maybe? Esmae loved the rodeo princess & we kept shoving sugar down the kids throats to keep them in one place.

Our heli of a holiday didn't end there, we got home from the rodeo around 10:45 and then ended up in the ER with Abe around 3:30am due to a croup attack. I think it maybe awhile until we all recover from this holiday!!

EVO Conference

I spent the weekend in Park City at the the beautiful Canyons resort. Avery sponsored me to attend this great social media conference. Being a conference newbie, I wasn't sure what to expect. I have to say I met some really talented people, listened to some amazing speakers & overall learned a lot of things I didn't know before. Social Media is a whole other world.....

Jaws dropped when fellow attendees asked my twitter id, to which I had to reply I didn't tweet or facebook for that matter. I see the value of it in many regards. Do I think it would help me? Yes. In fact I almost signed up for twitter. These days I am very aware of my time & how I spend it. I am just not ready to let twitter & facebook in yet, maybe tomorrow. I felt a little silly owning up to this at the conference but I had a lot of practice and as a result I realized for now I am sure of my feelings.

To which I reply "yes, yes it is." With the PC arts festival coming up its going to be

the summer house of horrors. I am looking at a pile of smashed up Pringles on my carpet and

a plethora of toys as far as the eye can see. I just half to ignore it and head in to my studio.
At least in my work I can chart the chaos.

Xanthe is moving onto kindergarten next year, good thing they are cousins.

I promise I haven't forgotten my project, just got a little sidetracked. Here is #10, this is right near Entrada in St. George if you know that area. No where else in the world do you get to see orange sand, black lava rock, red rock, sage brush & a turquoise blue sky. I love it there.

Promise I haven't been slacking here is # 8 & 9. These were kind of a break through for me. #8 was the first painting that came out exactly how I pictured it in my head. That never happens the process always alters it to varying degrees. It was like my hand & mind were totally in sync, I am loving outlining shadows as organic shapes in graphite and then staining them with paint. I love how the shapes can begin to describe something tangible. I am hooked on this style- it seems like the perfect combination

of mediums for me.

So I am experimenting, I'm trying a style more like my paper cuts & then applying a light watercolor wash selectively. I like the simplicity, child like quality & modern feel- plus they are really fun to do. I think I might do a set for the upcoming Beehive Bazaar & see how they do... I think they will look good framed simply white, or maybe blonde wood. Very plain & modern.

The word sketchy has many meanings but I am using it to describe my art weekend in St. George with my good friend Courtney. The winds blew & blew so we were forced to sketch from our car instead of plein air painting like we planned. We still got some painting time in on Saturday in Snow Canyon but it was kind of fun to sketch the desert in all its glory.

I am excited to do some paintings incorporating some photographs, my sketches & a color study. Is there anything more beautiful then Snow Canyon & the desert? I think not.

Court taking in the landscape, me with the best drink on the planet. Iced lemonade with coconut, vanilla and fresh mint. Blended. We went to this cool little art town right outside St. George called Kayenta. Amazing architecture with a seriously good organic cafe & art village, all among breath taking views of the desert. I am going to post more about Kayenta over at Todays Mama this week so be on the look out. Had sooo much fun but glad to see my fam. Abe was upset with me for several hours after my return & would only pay attention to Josh. He finally warmed up right before bedtime hopefully he will have fully forgiven me by the morning.

If Kaysville had to name a tree that most represented the city it would be the poplar. I have never seen more of them then around here, with their shallow roots and extreme height its not uncommon to see them leaning to one side or the other. I think I was channeling one of my most favorite artists, Wolf Kahn while painting this. Maybe I should try out more arbitrary colors with similar values like he does so brilliantly.

Painting #1- Finding my Roots 7x11

So every very successful artist I ask how they came up with their style & what was the time frame? All respond the same, paint a lot. Do a hundred paintings at least and then your style will start to emerge. In my head I'm always thinking well don't they know I am a Mother, I can't paint a lot..... I don't have time!! Enough excuses on my part no one said it would be easy & just because I am a mother I thought it would or should come easier to me, right? WRONG. In my small career I have probably done 40 paintings but I am starting back at 1. My goal? To paint 2 paintings a week until I hit 100 which should roughly be around the end of the year, so by 2011. I wish I could do more than 2 a week but I have to be realistic being a Mom and all. In the end I hope to have found my voice as a painter, built a portfolio with 10 really great paintings that represent me well. What will I do with the other 90 paintings? I am going to post them here 2 a week as I finish them. The majority of them will be available at a very discounted price, so if you see one you like email me, make me an offer! Chances are you will get what you offer. If you see one you don't like tell me, I have thick skin & would love the feedback.

on a side note: A small landscape of mine called view over 89 got in to the Bountiful Davis Art Center state wide competition. It will be on display there until the beginning of April. It's a good one to take the kiddo's to if your in to that kind of thing....

There is only 1 summer floaty and it is in fact Esmae's but Abe managed

The Cove

We watched the movie The Cove this weekend. It was really good. I've never been that into dolphins. Maybe it was the early 90's dolphin craze that produced bad art, bad t-shirts & the token dolphin ankle tattoo that turned me off. But after viewing this movie I realized what incredible creatures they really are. It's a documentary about this little town in Japan that for political & economical reasons slaughter 23,000 dolphins every year. It was eye opening & showed that through out history it is the passion of men that really brings about change, not committees or boards. I hate to think about how much time is wasted in the way our government & others run. Pick it up at your nearest red box.

I've been working on this small sketch for my Grandma for Christmas. This is her dog, well it represents
her 2 most beloved dogs Zar & Zarina. Both Norwegian Elkhounds and both up in heaven. Gram loves these dogs and I knew it was serious when she announced that she wished to be buried next to them at her ranch. I hope it gives her fond memories of them. Ok I am admitting, it got me thinking. One day (far away) we might get one of these type of dogs. They are fun to pet and didn't seem too needy.

Ghost Gully

Our house turned into Ghost Gully this Halloween for the famous Dopp party. There were about 100 kids walking through the neighborhood dressed up with white balloons, sacks of candy & prizes. Josh rigged a super cool ghost on a pulley, each year he fine tunes the process.

The balloons provided lots of entertainment before the festivities began. Of course my camera died before I could snap shots of all the little hooligans coming down the driveway for their surprises, but you get the idea.....

I was so sad to hear that one of Utah's best painters died in a car accident. He was 80 but I thought would still be around for a while. At the U my professors always asked me if I was related to him. I was always so tempted to say yes, that maybe some of his brilliance was in my DNA too. But I would always reply with honesty, not that I know of but maybe distantly. I HOPE. His work is incredible and he did so much for art in Utah. I love what he was quoted saying about the Utah landscape.

"To be in this country; to live in it much of your life; to understand its geology, its history, to see it in all its seasons, and still, ultimately, to know nothing that can summarize it. All you can do is have faith in the strength of the experience, paint, 'not knowing,' but with conviction in the significance of those feelings."
